More about @media and beyond

As if there's not been enough said about the recent @media conference I thought I'd say a little bit more.

Firstly, it was great to come back to London for a while and see friends and familiar places and have a bit of English cider. I had drastic jetlag though for the entire time which made the whole thing somewhat painful but more than worth it. Before coming I actually thought that alot of the presentations would be pitched a bit below my skill level and was looking forward to the social part of the event more but I was very wrong. Many of the speakers came up with really interesting topics, especially Zeldman with his history of WaSP which was really good.

The social aspects of the conference were still the highlight none the less. It was excellent to meet up with PPK finally and have a good chat about stuff. I'm still not convinced about this behaviour layer business at all. I hop I managed to get my point across. It could have been touch and go though with all the booze about. In the words of PK, "I've had too much of these huge english pints!". I also really wanted to have more chance to speak to Jeremy Keith after his presentation as well but never seemed to make it. Although I've been out of the loop lately (and out of the country) rest assured that when I'm back I'll be making some moves. As most of you know I've got quite an interest in JavaScript and now it seems the rest of the web world has too which is great. Another aspect of the web that was brought up was web applications and this is something that I plan to spend alot of time on when I get back.

Finally, I was really sorry to miss the JavaScript meet up on saturday. Apparently the JavaScript revolution happened and I missed it. Arse. We were elsewhere planning our own revolution. Watch this space.

Anyway, it was very good and made a change to this travelling business. Cheers Pat. Good skills.

Backpack It! 0.1

Backpack It! is a Greasemonkey user script that allows quick and easy adding of web page content (text and images) as notes to your Backpack with a simple keypress. Today I'm releasing the initial version 0.1.

To install the script ensure you have Firefox running with Greasemonkey 0.3 or above installed then right click on the link below and choose 'Install User Script'.

Backpack It!

Before you start using it you must configure it by adding you Backpack account's URL and API Token. Your URL will be in the form of http://yourusername.backpackit.com please ommit the trailing slash. You can obtain the API token by going to the account page of your Backpack and clicking the 'Show API Key' link at the bottom of the page.

Once you have this press Ctrl+Shift+B to bring up the Backpack It! configuration screen then fill in your details. Finish by clicking 'Update Configuration'.

PLEASE NOTE: Your API key is stored locally on your machine and is not sent to any external sources. Check the source if you don't believe me.

Now on any site you can select text on the page then press Ctrl+Shift+N to add the text and a link to the page as a note to your Backpack. Just select a page and your done. Easy.

You can also add images by pressing Ctrl+Shift+P and clicking an image on the screen but image support is in very early stages at the moment. Watch this space for further versions.

This is a very early version of Backpack It! and I plan to add alot more features in the coming weeks. Any feedback or feature requests are most welcome. Consider this version a sneak peak at what's to come. The latest stable version will be available in my Subversion code dump.

Erm, that's all folks. Hope you find it useful.

An excuse to procrastinate about music

Mr Cameron Adams has maimed me...erm, I mean memed me. It's like the blog equivelent of a chain letter where you have to blog the answer to the same questions that the person who sent it to you did. Well, while I don't condone this type of activity, this one is about music and I am bored so here we go...

Total volume of music files on my computer:

None, oh..actually I have just downloaded The Pants Dance from Dick and Dom in da Bungalow (Don't ask)...that's 456KB then.

The last CD I bought was:

I don't normally buy CDs but as I'm travelling I've had no choice. It was Guerilla Black - Guerilla City. He looks and sounds exactly like Biggie but hey, Biggie can't release albums when he's dead like Tupac can so it's got to be done. 2 or 3 amazing songs, rest are okay. Just like a Biggie album.

Song playing right now:

I'm listening to Jenna G's show on 1xtra dunno what the song is though. Ain't she done well? Used to do lots of gigs with her back in Manchester.

Five songs I listen to a lot/mean a lot to me:

  • Girls - The B-Boys The first hip hop track I ever heard. It's very lofi but very entertaining. Features the line: "I met a girl name Anna, From Louisiana, She don't wanna man cos she uses a banana" This kind of thing was a bit over my head when I was 8.
  • Metropolis - Adam F One of the greatest pieces of drum and bass ever I reckon. It reminds me of being VERY excited in rudebwoy Manchester clubs.
  • Sunshine Of Your Love - Spanky Wilson A staple of my DJ sets for a very long time now and the first dance at our wedding. Very good memories.
  • Bring Tha Ruckus - Wu-Tang Clan - The whole album was a bit of a revolution to the ears for most everyone that loved hip hop at the time. This is the opener. "Do you think your wu-tang sword can defeat me?".
  • Dr Octagon - Earth People When the album came out we all rushed to the stereo to listen to it and as soon as it started it changed my whole outlook on music.

Those selections aren't in any way my definative top five ever. That's simply too much to ask. It's just what came to mind at the time.

Five people to whom I am passing the baton:

Oh shit, this is the harsh bit. My selections are based on who I think will be most up for bollocking on about music and alternatively who I think is most likely to be bored.

  • Mr Fenn Winner of the most wholesome blog award for 3 years running. You'd never think he likes drum and bass that makes your face bleed.
  • Mr Lee King pornographer of all London town
  • Mr Gully If only so his site homepage isn't completely blank like it is now.
  • Ms Berry Traveller extrodinare. She's unemployed in Japan now so I figure she's got the spare time.
  • Erm, I don't know anyone else who has a blog well enough to annoy them with a meme...sorry.

Well, that passed an hour.

On a final note, cheers to Matt, Cameron, Lachlan and all the Melbourne WSG people as well as Seb and Trent and the Trading Post crew for helping us feel at home while we were in your home city. It's been good. Going for some beers in Melbourne this friday for a farewell type thing so let me know if your around.
